Pokémon Craze Sparks Investigation Call in Puerto Rico
A wave of concern is washing over Puerto Rico as reports of conflicts among schoolchildren over Pokémon trading cards have prompted a call for official investigation. Roberto Cruz, a representative from the city of Ponce, is urging the government to examine the impact of the rapid surge in popularity of Pokémon cards, video games, and related merchandise produced by Nintendo Co. Ltd.
Representative Cruz filed a resolution on Monday formally requesting the government to study the effects of this phenomenon. The craze has undeniably taken hold, impacting communities across the island.
“The Pokémon fever in Puerto Rico is notable... something that began as a video game and is now flooding the collectible cards market,” Cruz stated to reporters last week after submitting the resolution. He expressed concern over the potential negative consequences stemming from the intense demand and perceived value of these collectibles.
While Pokémon has long enjoyed global popularity, the recent surge in card collecting and trading, particularly among younger audiences, has raised questions about the impact on school environments and potentially the broader economy. The resolution aims to better understand these issues and potentially suggest preventative measures.
